The longer I blog the more questions I get asked about it. Some are funny and make me laugh and some make me realize that a lot of people have no idea what influencers actually do and how big the blogging world is. I understand that you will never change the minds of some people and while I can tell them all the amazing things I’ve done because of my blog, it’s not a job and never will be to them. Here are a few misconceptions that hopefully answer some questions about the ever-growing world of blogging.
Blogging is Easy
Anyone can start an Instablog or blog and become a blogger. And that’s exactly how I started. I soon found that it took more than having my co-worker snap a picture of my daily outfit and posting on Instagram. There’s planning content, styling looks, scheduling photo shoots, writing blog posts, posting Instagram posts, filming Instastories, attending events and communicating with brands for weeks regarding collaborations. It’s a constant job. There are really no days off and you’re constantly working on something. So yes, anyone can be a blogger, but if you are serious about it, be prepared to be dedicated to it 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
You Can’t Make Money as a Blogger
I once got asked if I got paid to teach fitness classes. I laughed and said in a sarcastic tone, “No I just do it for fun.” When I get asked if I make money for blogging my answer when I first started blogging would’ve been the same answer without the tone. Now I would answer a straight yes. People who don’t frequent the social media world don’t understand how much impact influencers have on their following. During the last Nordstrom Anniversary sale, I simply showed one item I purchased on my Instastories and sold 12 pairs. Big companies are taking notice and using their marketing dollars to pay influencers to promote products instead of traditional advertising. So to answer your question, you can and will make money at blogging, but you have to put in the time and work and it will not happen overnight.
You Have To Have Money To Be a Blogger
This is a huge misconception and one I thought was true when I first started blogging. I would see every other blogger who I followed with the latest Gucci handbag or Louis Vuitton shoes and wonder where they were getting all this money from. They seemed to be full-time bloggers and didn’t have any other source of income so they must be wealthy right? Wrong. Maybe this is true to a point, but bloggers also get a lot of things for free including designer bags and shoes. If you’re new to blogging getting free things, especially expensive items, won’t happen for a while. I’m not even there yet, but Gucci if you’re reading this, feel free to send me ANYTHING! Lol So don’t let seeing “big” bloggers with all their designer duds discourage you from starting a blog. Just work with what you have in your closet and the occasional shopping trip.
When it comes down to it, whether it’s blogging or something else that you’re passionate about, just do it! Take Nike’s advice and just start and be consistent. It’s going to be tough and you’ll have some hiccups and want to quit at some point, but don’t. Once you get that first collaboration or get invited to something amazing or make your first dollar, I swear it will all be worth it!!
